San Diego Comic-Con 2013: Thursday recap

This was our first year fully embracing the Con and diving in with a 4-day Pass. I’m ruined now. My apologies in advance to anyone I know who may ever get married on SDCC weekend. Can’t make it.

Since I’ve had folks ask me what it’s like to actually attend, I though I’d break down each of our days to give you a taste of what we experienced. We also participated in so much awesomeness, I don’t want to forget a bit of it!

We arrived bright and early to discover that it was, shockingly, already busy.
Thursday

We headed straight to the Exhibit Hall to do a little shopping (I had my eye on a Mudders Milk flask from the Browncoats booth) and check out a few of the bigger booths while it was quiet(er).

Thursday

There were already some clever costumes walking around.

I loved when this woman spotted our dueling shirts:

From there we decided to grab a little lunch and head up to the Ballroom 20 line.  There was a Matt Smith panel later in the afternoon that we wanted to catch and figured it would require a little waiting to get in.  We were incredibly lucky to be surrounded by really interesting and friendly folks in the line. Someone from a cable show, a pediatric ER doctor, the head of the History department at a southern college and the two of us. We were a varied group.  There were hours of GREAT conversation while we waited and time just flew.

Much to our surprise, we ended up getting into the room a bit early which meant we got to see the entire 20th Anniversary X-Files panel. I didn’t dare hope we’d see that one too. There was much excitement in our waiting group.

Thursday

After that was the EW Brave New Warriors Panel, what we had actually lined up to see.

Thursday

A few highlights:

Once out of the panel, we had a quick walk through the autograph area…

Thursday

…and then we were ready to head into the Gaslamp District to try to find some dinner and figure out our evening plans.

Thursday

We soon turned a corner and found ourselves faced with a very short line. So of course we got into it. The thing about SDCC is that lines are everywhere and they are always long.  If you find a short one, you get in it quickly.  There will be time later to find out what it’s for.

This time, it was our lucky day. The line was for entrance to MTV’s big party for the evening.  Free food, free drinks, free concert.  Sounded good to us. There were rumors of a secret Metallica show, but it really didn’t seem like the right crowd.  Turns out there WAS a secret Metallica show that night…it was just a block or so away.

Thursday

We rode rides and danced like crazy at the silent disco.

Thursday

Finally we grabbed some food and drinks to settle in for the free show by New Politics.

Thursday

During the Dillon Francis set, a crowd circle formed for the dance acrobatics of the crowd. Always entertaining. Because it was Comic-Con there was also a sword eater in full costume who just happened to be in the crowd. He hopped into the center for a turn of his own.

The video is awful, but who could have planned for that!

Day 1: Success
